Stay Healthy = Read Labels!
While reading ingredient labels may not be what you most look forward to during your supermarket trips, making a regular habit of looking for key chemicals to avoid could be one of your best health investments ever. Modern “processed” food is killing people in the USA. Literally and undeniably. It’s easy to protect yourself, too, one ingredient at a time. Health-conscious shoppers are not intimidated by the fine print anymore. We want to know what is in our family’s food.
An easy word to look for is “hydrogenated.” If I see that single word in an ingredient list, I pass on that product. Put simply, it is a man-made industrial process to make oils or fats more solid. Avoid it. Another unfortunately common ingredient to look for is “cottonseed oil” often found in cheaper potato chips, cans of mixed nuts, and other products. None of the CEOs selling this ingredient to your family would put a big jug of cottonseed oil on their own dinner table and invite their own children to eat it, would they?
What else does my family avoid in the interest of better health?
– Potassium Sorbate (preservative found in lots of cheaper, not fresh, dairy products such as sour cream and cottage cheese)
– Sodium Benzoate (another preservative, in lots of canned and dried processed foods)
– Saccharin (It’s in nearly every toothpast on the store shelves, so we use old-fashioned baking soda.) Also all other “artificial sweeteners” are never bought. We don’t want to eat anything artificial.
– Palm oil. Though cheap, it is one of the worst possible oils to put in your body and is more appropriately used in soap. It is in some common brands of peanut butter.
Fortunately, the health drink industry – smoothies, energy drinks like AIO drink, etc – has a great reputation of steering clear of what my family call not “ingredients” but contaminants!
